Corporate Controller – Commercial Mechanical & HVAC Services
Job Details
We are seeking a detail-driven, strategically minded Corporate Controller to lead and refine the financial operations of our commercial mechanical and HVAC organization. This role serves as a critical bridge between technical field operations and financial strategy—ensuring optimal resource allocation, cost control, regulatory compliance, and high quality financial reporting that empowers executive decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Compliance
- Oversee all financial operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
- Evaluate current financial practices and implement robust internal controls and process improvements.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, record‑keeping, and financial reporting processes for leadership and the C-suite.
Financial Management
- Lead the preparation and analysis of budgets, forecasts, and financial statements.
- Provide ongoing financial data analysis to enhance operational efficiency and profitability.
- Maintain accurate and timely accounting records across all company departments.
Team Leadership
- Lead Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable teams, ensuring accurate, timely execution of all financial functions.
- Establish and maintain strong policies, procedures, and performance standards.
- Partnership and Collaboration with HR Department as applicable for Payroll, Compensation and Commission Management.
Audit & External Partner Collaboration
- Serve as the primary liaison with the company’s external CPA firm and internal auditors.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting and support the audit process from planning through completion.
Policy & Process Development
- Develop and maintain clear financial policies and procedures that support operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure all accounting practices align with GAAP and industry best practices.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare timely, accurate consolidated financial reports to assess company performance.
- Conduct ongoing variance, balance sheet, P\&L, and cash flow analyses.
- Provide recommendations based on financial insights to support strategic decision-making.
Additional Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Support special projects as assigned, including system enhancements, cost initiatives, and operational integrations.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of finance or accounting experience, ideally within a professional services, construction, mechanical, HVAC, or related industry.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA or CMA preferred, but not required.
- Demonstrated experience managing budgeting, forecasting, and consolidated financial reporting.
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting, asset management, and ERP systems.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to supervise and develop high-performing teams.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, customers, and executives.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with high attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Customer‑focused mindset with strong negotiation abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, financial automation tools, and digital accounting platforms.
- Experience with ADP payroll systems.
- Experience with extracting and/or uploading data between operating, payroll and financial systems.
- Working knowledge of 401(k) ERISA regulated retirement plans.
- Ability to manage AP/AR aging, cash flow analysis, and department-level financial performance.
- Experience preparing WIP schedules and supporting project-based financial reviews.
- Familiarity with Union Collective Bargaining Agreements is strongly preferred.
- Strong follow-up, follow-through, and organizational skills.
